COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)

for June 2020
CSA is a relationship between local farmers and customers that creates and supports a model for distributing local food.
The CSA member pays a set fee at the beginning of the season. Once products come into season, the CSA member receives a selection of veggies (and/or other farm products) on a regular basis. There is a shared risk between the CSA member and farmer – in bumper crop years, members can expect to receive extra produce and in more challenging years, some products may be in limited quantities due to factors outside of the farmers’ control.
This model greatly supports small scale farmers because it provides cash flow early on in the season when the farmer is making purchases and it creates a steady and predictable demand for the farmer. The member benefits by gaining access to quality local food and often a discount on products. Both parties benefit by together creating a model that supports a local food system, which benefits the local economy, environment, and overall wellbeing for all those involved.

What if I have vacation time and will miss a pickup? We encourage members to have someone pick up their share (a house sitter? a friend in need?) but if you have no options, please e-mail email@example.com and we will be happy to make accommodations.
How does the pickup work? Come to the farm on Wednesdays between 4:30pm and 6:30pm. Typically, members can expect a list on the wall of what is in the week’s basket and the veggies are laid out on shelves to be selected. However, with the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are offering a drive-thru pick up format. We ask members to remain in or near their vehicles.
Can I come early? No, but this is because we aim to have the veggies ready to go for 4:30pm and having early pick ups unfortunately interrupts our process.
What if I come late? If you can’t make the pick up time by 6:30pm, no problem, your basket will be waiting on the shelf in the Milkhouse labelled with your name. Just be sure that you make it on the Wednesday.
What if I suddenly can’t make the pickup? Please please please, try to send someone on your behalf but if you have no options, send an e-mail to Brenna (firstname.lastname@example.org) and your veggies can be set aside for you. We understand that life happens!
What if I forget all together? If you forget your basket altogether, don’t worry, it won’t be wasted. We donate all forgotten CSA baskets to the Grind (in Pembroke) on Thursday mornings. The produce gets used to prepare meals for the clients of the coffee house/shelter.
What do I bring to the pickup? Normally members bring their own bin/basket/produce bags to collect veggies, in a dedicated effort to reduce waste. However, due to COVID-19, we are pre-packing all veggies in a large paper bag.
Do you offer opportunities to help on the farm? We normally have a community work day at the farm in October for garlic planting and we hope to offer this again in 2020. However, out of precaution with regards to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are restricting all access to the garden/wash station until further notice.
Do you offer flexible payments? Typically we request a 50% deposit at the time of ordering and the remainder due May 1st. However, we do happily offer flexible options in smaller increments. We just ask that payment dates are agreed upon beforehand so that expectations are clear.
